Total Mayhem Games - We Were Here Tomorrow

Two trailers for the newest game in Total Mayhem Games' co-op puzzle series, with every frame animated in engine.

Making great cinematics and launch trailers for new games is something we love to do at Hocus Pocus Studio. We Were Here Tomorrow takes Total Mayhem Games' super popular co-op series into the future. Two Explorers wake inside the Norček facility, a retro-futuristic complex they have no memory of arriving at, and the only way out is to talk each other through puzzles that play with time, gravity and space.

Our first job was to make the launch trailer, which included a cinematic spoof employee induction scene. We dialled up the performance of the Director to 11 so it became obvious she was less than sincere about the new hire's welfare.

Of course there's lots of gameplay too. This was particularly challenging as each player has their own abilities and only half the information, and the series' walkie-talkie is still the only line between them. So we needed to make sure the co-op came across in the gameplay.

We loved working with the look of the game: an 80s vision of the future, all chunky lettering, neon grids, heavy CRT consoles and a synthwave score. It's a world that feels cool, cosy and familiar, and we hope that comes across clearly in the trailer.

We ended up making two 60-second films for the release (nearly 50 playouts in total!). The explanatory trailer, in which Creative Director Martin Mittner introduces the new setting and what has changed for the series, launched alongside the release date announcement and ran across the PlayStation and Xbox channels. It's a great friendly way of getting to know the game.

All of the animation was done in engine. We worked inside Total Mayhem's own Unity project, building additional assets and rigs where the shots needed them, so everything on screen is the game itself, including the cinematic sequences that open and close the launch trailer.
