Samsung Galaxy: TV Commercial
Hocus Pocus Studio produced the hand-drawn animated insert for a Samsung Galaxy TV commercial for GMO Engine Tokyo, a frame-by-frame sequence depicting a celebrated pianist's imagined performance.
GMO Engine, Tokyo, chose Hocus Pocus Studio to produce the animated sequence at the heart of this Samsung Galaxy commercial, a film that follows a celebrated Japanese pianist as he uses his phone to prepare for a major upcoming concert.
The brief called for an animated insert that would contrast with the live-action world around it. Where the commercial's tone is precise and considered, the animation needed to feel expansive and alive. We created a hand-drawn sequence depicting the pianist's imagined performance -- a moment where preparation gives way to the concert itself, rendered entirely by hand, frame by frame, as a deliberate counterpoint to the technology it celebrates.
Every element of the animated sequence was drawn and animated by hand. The result is a piece that sits apart from the live-action footage not by accident but by design: vivid, kinetic, and unapologetically crafted.
